These highly specialized bolts play a critical role in oil and gas industry applications, primarily in offshore and subsea contexts due to their superior corrosion resistance and mechanical endurance.

API 20E Bolts
The purpose of the API 20E standard is to delineate the requirements for alloy and carbon steel bolting used in the petroleum and natural gas industries. A primary focus of this specification is that bolts must be heat-treated to obtain essential properties like strength and durability. The API 20E specification permits three types, or ‘categories,’ of bolting – BSL-1, BSL-2, and BSL-3. These categories signify the element of control in the manufacturing process and the qualification testing minutes for each bolt accordingly. BSL-1 bolting is the least restrictive, while BSL-3 is the most restrictive ensuring each bolt has been individually tested to stringent standards. Enhanced quality control and individual testing of bolts under BSL-3 provide higher confidence in their performance under critical service conditions.
API 20F Bolts
API 20F standard outlines the requirements for corrosion-resistant bolting material and bolting components for use in the petroleum and natural gas industries. These bolts are designed explicitly for hostile environments, where conditions such as exposure to corrosive elements, high pressure, and varying temperatures are prevalent.
It specifies two types of corrosion-resistant alloys (CRA), specifically Type 1 – Iron-based CRAs (e.g., stainless steels and alloys) and Type 2 — nickel-based CRAs. These categories essentially deal with the materials’ resistance to different corrosion types, including general corrosion, sulfide stress cracking, stress corrosion cracking, and crevice corrosion.
Both API 20E and API 20F bolts are pivotal in oil and gas industry applications, offering enhanced safety and performance under demanding conditions. With their rigorous standards and testing procedures, these bolts ensure reliability, thereby minimizing risk and ensuring the integrity of oil and gas operations.
